Waldon doesn't exist?[edit]

This is one of those fascinating bit of political geography. Waldon doesn't exist by any standard I can find. The USPS doesn't even recognize it as a valid city. Goto the zip code lookup, and punch "waldon, ca". It will return "93283" which isn't for Waldon, but Weldon, CA down by Bakersfield. If you use the USPS zip code lookup for 1365 Treat Blvd, Walnut Creek, CA (Its the address for Pleasant Hill (BART station) - it will come back with 94597 (Walnut Creek). If you try waldon instead of WC - it will kick back as invalid. Another fun fact as its not a city, it doesn't seem to have a website. It should be: http://www.ci.waldon.ca.us/ (but its not).

The reason why this fascinates me so much is because I currently live in the area classified as "Waldon". All of my main is address to Walnut Creek, with a WC zip code. Now, don't get me wrong. I've seen the signs in the area notifying that it is an Unincorporated section of Contra Costa County. I'm going to go enquirer with the local governments to see what I can find out - because this is just damnedably odd. --ShakataGaNai (talk) 04:48, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I used to live there. Waldon does have a (quarterly?) newsletter that gets sent out, and until I got one, I had no idea Waldon existed. It isn't too big, and is just a neighborhood-type thing delineated by a few streets. I'm willing to go with that. When my car got broken into, I called the Walnut Creek police and was informed that since it was an unincorporated area, I ought to call the county sheriff. Waldon, California → Waldon, Walnut Creek, California – Waldon is not a City or Town. Common usage of "Waldon, CA" implies it is one or the other. I propose a name change to Waldon, Walnut Creek, California (talk) 05:14, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. I think this relatively newly registered user has a misconception about what Wikipedia does and does not store. Wikipedia does not normally store the actual borders of U.S. states, counties, cities or Census Designated Places. Many mapping services like Google Maps instead may import them directly from the U.S. Census Bureau itself (like their Cartographic Boundary Files Even the map image File:Contra Costa County California Incorporated and Unincorporated areas Waldon Highlighted.svg was created using the U.S. Census Bureau data. Furthermore, there are many communities and Census Designated Places like this one in which the United States Postal Service does not list them as a valid city name for one reason or another. On the other hand, Wikipedia does have an article for every Census Designated Place past and present, like this one, and are titled in the form [[Placename, State]]. Even if this Wikipedia article is deleted, renamed or changed, it will not stop these mapping services from importing the U.S. Census Bureau's boundary files directly "to remove portions of Walnut Creek from their maps" -- because they are recognized by at least one government body: the U.S. Census Bureau. Nominator has since retracted the mapping and USPS reasons[1] However, it still stands that this is still in an unincorporated area, and not inside the city borders of Walnut Creek (see the city's zoning map), and like all the other the articles in Category:Unincorporated communities in the United States by state, there is a Wikipedia article for populated unincorporated areas and communities, and are generally titled with the consistent format [[Placename, State]] per WP:USPLACE.Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:05, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. As Zzyzx11 states, boundary maps do not originate from Wikipedia. The proposed new title does not follow Wikipedia naming conventions. Finally, we title unincorporated communities and CDP's as Place_name, State. This place used to be a CDP. • Gene93k (talk) 11:09, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rename to Waldon, Walnut Creek, California. We generally make it 100% clear that sub-sections of cities are sub-sections of a city, and we generally use the present name for a place with past different names, unless there is enough to justify having multiple articles on the same place. Waldon is a neighborhood of Walnut Creek that for a time was a seperate census-designated place. There is not enough for two articles so the one article should reflect the current situation.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:19, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that Waldon's territory is now part of the Contra Costa Centre CDP, not inside the borders of Walnut Creek (see the city's zoning map),. A better solution would be to merge this to the Contra Costa Centre, California article instead. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:05, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
