Contradictory information

[edit]
  • When I go over to wikipedia's article about the Puntaraenas canton, I find:

"The canton of Puntarenas is subdivided into 16 distritos (Spanish: 'districts')"

with Isla de Cocos as entry #10

  • But THIS article on wikipeida has:

"It constitutes the 11th district[2] (one of 13) of Puntarenas Canton"

Piracy and hidden treasures

[edit]

Lionel Wafer and George Vancouver were amongst the best known captains who have visited the island.I.E. Eibesfeld, Las islas Galápagos (1975: 253) gives a summary of its history, mentioning Benito Bonito, a Portuguese pirate. Bonito allegedly buried the Lima treasure on Cocos Island during the war of independence in Peru.

A second tresure was said to be buried on the island. Captain William Thompson was given treasures from Lima and ordered to sail them on his ship the Mary Dear to safety. But the temptation was too great for he and his first mate, James Alexander Forbes. They slew the guards and hid the treasure on Cocos Island. The secret was transmitted to a friend of Thompson called John Keating. Some believe that Keating has managed to retrieve part of the treasure. Later a descendant of James Alexander Forbes, John Forbes made five trips to the island, the last one in 1950.

The island became part of Costa Rica in 1832. By the decree No. 54 of the Constitutional Assembly of the free state of Costa Rica, in April 1832, thirteen shipwrecked Chileans of a frigate have been saved from the "Isla de Cocos." Felipe Molina in his book (1851) considers the island as an insular territory of Costa Rica.

You should also visit the pages of german journalist Peter Disch-Lauxmann at: http://cocos-island.org who runs the Cocos Island Research center. He wrote the german language book "Die authentische Geschichte von Stevensons Schatzinsel" Rasch & Roehring, 1985, Hardcover. Very good reference!

This site disputes the treasure stories:[1].--Jack Upland (talk) 08:51, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cocos Island Flag

[edit]

Hi there. Just wondering, is there an official flag for Cocos Island of Costa Rica, that would be different from its national flag 🇨🇷? 🙂

Plus, at the same time, the Costa Rican territory should not be confusing its own territorial flag for the Australian territory of “Cocos (Keeling) Islands” flag “🇨🇨”. Craig Lungren (talk) 07:56, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
