How does Damped Harmonic Motion apply to shock absorbers on your car? The amplitude decreases because of the affect of resistive force. In your car, the shock absorbers take the force and dampen it, giving a decreased affect on the driver. Can springs in the shock absorbers look like the springs used in the experiment? No. Shock absorbers need soft springs in order to sufficiently dampen the force. Otherwise, in the case of the car, the ride would be jostled.
