I think I've got everything right in here, but there are definitely areas that need filling out. One particular area is what the CIPO utility homepage mentions: Supporting multiple formats (binary, old ASCII, new ASCII, crc, HPUX binary, HPUX old ASCII, old tar, and POSIX.1 tar). I don't quite understand that. I only heard of this format recently while studying about RPM in a red hat book, and had difficulty finding more information about CPIO anywhere. Now at least Wikipedia has a basic article describing what I managed to decipher about it. Hopefully someone else can add to it. -- techtoucian

What? no mention of pax and the tar vs CPIO dispute?

Merging

[edit]

Since the name of the program is cpio, this article should be merged into Cpio, not the other way around. 83.71.47.204 22:40, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
