Family categories[edit]

I was creating a category for the acting/politics family, Category:Lapid family (Philippines), and I am wondering, do you add the films that one member of the family starred into the category? And do you add the positions that one member of the family held? All answers will be appreciated.

Citation needed within article?[edit]

An editor removed a "Citation needed" template from Faye Dunaway#1967–1968: Early films and breakthrough with the edit summary "Already indexed right here on Wiki". The content in question is "Preminger's film did not meet critical or box-office success, but Dunaway retained notice enough to earn a Golden Globe Award nomination for New Star of the Year."

I assume that Wikipedia:Verifiability means that verification should appear in the article in which the content appears -- not just somewhere on Wikipedia. Am i wrong in that assumption? Eddie Blick (talk) 03:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Teblick: you are correct: Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source for itself. The citation(s) must be copied from those other articles into this article. Please assume good faith (WP:AGF) and work together with the other editor to replace the "Citation needed" template with the appropriate citations(s) from the other articles. The article's talk page is a good place to collaborate. -Arch dude (talk) 04:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @Arch dude. I appreciate that advice. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:45, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New user playing with multiple accounts[edit]

Should I have reported <this situation> (userlist) to some admin or is an uw-agf-sock warning enough as I have done? Not that I expect to run into exactly this situation again - and posting about it here already brings awareness in this case.

These clearly violate the socking policy, I only warned because they have not edited outside userspace. – 2804:F1...BC:2770 (talk) 03:58, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bare URL and dead link.[edit]

I've recently been trying to expand bare referances. One issue I've come across is articles with permanantly dead bare links. I've seen some editors label these "dead link" and others with "bare url". Should these links be tagged as dead, bare, or both? In case I wasn't clear, here is an example of a page with this issue. CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath (talk) 04:59, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath Bare URLs are really only fixable if the link is not dead yet, so tagging it after the fact isn't helpful. So I think it would be better practice to tag as just dead. It's probably not worth making edits to fix though. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 05:52, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks. That was my thought as well but wanted to double check. CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath (talk) 05:53, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath, the logical next step in a case like this is to carry out a competent internet search in attempt to verify the poorly referenced assertion. If you discover a reliable source, then use it to create a new reference to replace the dead links that are so common with bare URLs. Cullen328 (talk) 07:42, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
dead link is helpful; bare url is harmful. bare url will often induce bots and incautious editors with imperfect citation scripts to come round and garble the reference, leaving it with a source free of any maintenance tags where the full citation information amounts to |title=Page not found|website=ema.europa.eu or similar. Folly Mox (talk) 14:46, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There was a big ol' fight about this a few years back. Folly Mox (talk) 14:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply it makes a lot of sense. I'm currently using the cleanup listing to find the bare URLs so once it updates I'll replace the bare url templates with dead link templates and see what I can find as far as alternative sources. CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath (talk) 17:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath: I think "step zero" is to try to see if the URL was archived. If so, build a citation from the archived copy. -Arch dude (talk) 15:31, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do usually check however I was specifically reffering to links that aren't archived. CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath (talk) 17:52, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to reverse a redirect?[edit]

Currently, Turbinate reduction surgery redirects to Turbinectomy. I would like to reverse the redirect: rename Turbinectomy to Turbinate reduction surgery, and have Turbinectomy point to it instead. The reasons for the move are outlined here.

How should I go about doing this? Do I need to delete Turbinate reduction surgery first? Amayorov (talk) 11:55, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't turbinectomy the more common term? Doug butler (talk) 14:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The more common term for one of the two surgeries, according to the sources quoted on the linked talkpage.
I feel like this might be able to be accomplished by a round-robin move by someone with pagemover rights (Turbinate reduction surgeryTurbinoplasty without leaving a redirect, TurbinectomyTurbinate reduction surgery), but I'm not sure if the history of the redirect Turbinate reduction surgery is considered trivial enough, and the move may require admin rights. Assuming in any case consensus is reached for the rename. Folly Mox (talk) 14:31, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've outlined the reasons for the move here. Generally, Turbinectomy and Turbinoplasty are considered different procedures. Both of them fall under Turbinate reduction surgery. Amayorov (talk) 18:30, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Amayorov, and welcome to the Teahouse. You have done the right thing by opening a discussion; but you should wait several days for input from other people knoweldgeable about the subject before going ahead. If nobody replies in, say, a week, you can take that as acceptance.
When the time comes, you can request the move at WP:RM. ColinFine (talk) 15:40, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

wikipedia's search engine[edit]

I am curious about the ordering of results from Wikipedia's internal search engine. (1) Is its algorithm described somewhere? (2) Where might one send comments on the algorithm? Mdmi (talk) 13:30, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Usually the results come back ordered by pageview, although I don't remember this being documented anywhere. For the factors used to determine which autocomplete suggestions to display, there's fairly good details at mw:Extension:CirrusSearch/CompletionSuggester. The main help page for the search engine is at mw:Help:CirrusSearch. The whole codebase is open source, so if you're comp sci enough you might be interested in the GitHub repo. In terms of reaching the devs, they'll see bug reports at phab:tag/mediawiki-search, but I'm not sure where general feedback would be best received. What are your comments specifically? Perhaps we can figure out how best to get in touch, or even solve your problem directly with additional information. Folly Mox (talk) 14:20, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh right I forgot the main thrust of the question. You might find :mw:Help:CirrusSearch § Explicit sort orders an informative read. Folly Mox (talk) 14:22, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism help request from Googolplexus[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at Cockatoo, Victoria. Namely, a bunch of different IP addresses keep adding something about 'Gryphen's Bachelor Pad' to this article and surrounding areas like Emerald, Victoria. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? I reverted the latest vandalism myself but they keep coming back so I was wondering if there was a way to get them to stop doing it - though it comes from different IPs a lot of the time so I'm not sure. Thank you, Googolplexus (talk) 16:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Googolplexus. I do not think the vandalism is frequent enough to justify semi-protection. Just keep an eye on the articles. Perhaps an edit filter might be useful. Cullen328 (talk) 18:13, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is the correct protocol for revising a move request statement after the fact at Talk:Disagreement (disambiguation)? --Jax 0677 (talk) 17:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jax 0677, unless you're making a major change like altering the suggested move target, you can edit the statement like you would any other talkpage post: surround the text you're removing with <del>...</del>, place the new text you're adding inside ins, and add a second timestamp to your original signature like edited ~~~~~. Infobox parameter -- display as link[edit]

I would like an infobox parameter to display as a link. An example of this may be found at, say, the infobox in the wikipedia page for Oxford, UK: Oxford wherein the parameter "Demonym" appears in the infobox as a link. What is the standard way to do this? Neither the "Edit Source" on that wikipedia page, nor the relevant Infobox Template page Template:Infobox settlement seem to give any clue on how this should be done. Jriley (talk) 19:04, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

|population_demonym=Oxonian did not work for you?
Trappist the monk (talk) 19:14, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Trappist. Your code might work, but I don't see the double brackets on the Edit Source page. All I see for that line is:
| population_demonym = Oxonian
... and it's the bit of code that tells the wp server to serve up the parameter's corresponding value as a link that I would like to use. Jriley (talk) 19:37, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you try: |population_demonym=Oxonian|population_demonym=Oxonian? Do the change manually or there is a 'magic button' in the source editor header that looks like a pair of chain links. Highlight 'Oxonian' and click the magic button. Choose the destination that you want and click the 'Insert link' button.
Trappist the monk (talk) 19:45, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again Trappist. It's the parameter ("Demonym") I need to show as a link, not the value ("Oxonian"). This would mean something like:
| population_demonym = Oxonian
... which breaks the infobox. Jriley (talk) 19:59, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At Oxford, the label 'Demonym' is linked to Demonym so what you are really asking eludes me.
Trappist the monk (talk) 21:44, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot control how the parameter names are displayed in an infobox, (unless there are other parameters to allow you to). They are coded in the template itself. You would need to edit the template (and possibly an underlying module) to get the parameter name to display as a wikilink. ColinFine (talk) 22:16, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I think Jriley wants to introduce a link on a currently unlinked secret field label of a secret infobox on a secret page. I don't know why so many posters insist on keeping it super secret from helpers what they actually want help with but it's very annoying and wastes a huge amount of time. It's the infobox template itself and not the caller which controls both the text and any link on the infobox labels in the left column. The caller only controls the value in the right column. A few infoboxes have additional parameters to control the label of one or a few of their normal parameters. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:25, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou Trappist and ColinFine. I had a look at the infobox template page, and could see nothing there indicating how the parameter entry shows as a link on the wp page. I suspect indeed there is an underlying module as you suggest Colin. Jriley (talk) 22:26, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At Infobox settlement, the linking of the label 'Demonym' is handled by this markup:
| label103 = {{Pluralize from text|{{if empty|{}|{}force plural}}|link=Demonym|singular=Demonym|likely=Demonym(s)|plural=Demonyms}}
Trappist the monk (talk) 22:40, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Trappist :) Jriley (talk) 22:42, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I change the title of my submitted draft while not being an autoconfirmed user?[edit]

Recently, I submitted my article draft for review, but after doing so, realized that the title of my article was still User:MY NAME/Sandbox. Is there any way to change this or will it be removed if my article is accepted to publish? I am not an autoconfirmed user so I think this might make the process harder. Henry Trevithick (talk) 19:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Trevithick, I have moved page User:Henry Trevithick/sandbox to Draft:Health effects of ultra-processed foods as article titles generally use sentence case. Usually drafts don't get reviewed immediately and someone will move them from sandbox to draftspace if necessary. TSventon (talk) 20:15, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

what rights to remove a page from *someone else's* watchlist?[edit]

Just curious, what level of "mop bucket" is required to have the ability to remove page from a users watchlist. Do administrators or bureaucrats have that ability or would it take office action? (I know it seems silly, but I once actually had a new user indicate that someone should remove a page that this user "owned" (since they worked for the group) from my watchlist). Is this a WP:VPT question?Naraht (talk) 21:03, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

According to Help:Watchlist#Privacy, No other user, not even administrators, can tell what is in your watchlist, or who is watching any particular page. Publicly available database dumps do not include this information either. However, developers who have access to the servers that hold the Wikipedia database can obtain this information. Making a map of the BERTS[edit]

Hello, can we request that we make a map of BERTS, a canceled project in Bangkok, Thailand, and get some sources to make a map? See the map on FB post: [1] Jussie2024 (talk) 22:23, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is relatively unlikely that you will find anybody here who will be interested in doing that. You could certainly ask at the WP:Graphics Lab/Map workshop. But I would guess that while people there may be interested in helping you create a map, they will not be willing to spend the time finding the resources, and will expect you to do that. Sending a Photo for a page[edit]

I tried to upload in editing but it would not save it? Please let me know how to send the photo to be added to my Wikipedia page.

Thank you. JOYCEMM12 (talk) 22:29, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JOYCEMM12 see Wikipedia:File upload wizard for instructions on uploading files. Note, all uploaded photos must have a Creative Commons (or the like) license, or be uploaded under fair use. Once the file is uploaded, see Help:Pictures for instructions on inserting it into Meli'sa Morgan. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 09:29, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Meli'sa. While Sungodtemple's answer is correct, I don't think it is as helpful as it might be.
There are two issues. The more important, from Wikipedia's point of view, is that of conflict of interest: in general you should not be directly editing the artilce Meli'sa Morgan yourself, but instead should raise edit requests on the article's talk page. Having said that, inserting an image is probably OK; but (for example) replacing an existing image with another one would probably not be: it would be up to uninvolved editors, not to you, to decide which is the most fitting image of those available.
Secondly, there is the image itself. Wikipedia is very careful about copyright. For an article about a living person, the only permissible photo is one that has been explicitly licensed with a permissive licence such as WP:CC-BY-SA by the copyright owner (who is not usually the subject).
So, if you have a photo where you own the copyright (either because you took it yourself, or because the photographer has specifically assigned you the copyright) then you may upload it, and declare in doing so that you are the copyright owner, and you are releasing it under a suitable licence. (Be aware that in doing so, you are granting an irrevocable licence to anybody in the world to reuse and alter the photo, as long as they attribute its source).
If you do not own the copyright, then you will need the owner to either upload it as I have explained, or to explicitly license it: see donating copyright materials. ColinFine (talk) 11:51, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Activity on draft[edit]

Draft:Thomas Robert Swift (neurologist)

After a very speedy rejection, followed by me making the requested changes, no new activity has occurred for several days. Could someone check on this, please?

Thank you,

John Henson Jhenson1 (talk) 11:48, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You submitted it again, three days ago. At the top, it says "This may take 4 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order." Please be patient.
While you are waiting, I strongly suggest that you read WP:REFB, and format all your bare URLs as proper citations: it wouldn't surprise me if that is one of the reasons why no reviewer has picked up your draft again.
I would advise also looking critically at each of your sources, and checking that it meets all three of the criteria in 42: reliability, independence, and significant coverage of the subject. I suspect very few of them do so. ColinFine (talk) 11:58, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jhenson1 it is a hard requirement that biographies of living people have in-line citations after every statement. Currently most of your draft is uncited. I have declined it on this basis. Please see the tutorial at WP:INTREFVE to add in-line citations throughout.
The key thing is, however, does Thomas meet our notability criteria at WP:NACADEMIC? If not, he does not merit an article. If you think he does, you need to prove that through the use of sources. Qcne (talk) 12:41, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Quote from the draft: "He is a scribbler of verse and is known for extemporaneous singing, leading to the following unpublished rhyme by his son, Andrew.

There is a doctor named Tom

He can dance and sign with aplomb

With the verve of a dervish

He doctors the nervish

When perplexed he bursts into song"

How on earth is this notable? I'm also worried about WP:COI and WP:BOSS here.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:21, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Name can't be changed because old name already exists?[edit]

A soccer club I follow and frequently contribute to had a temporary name change last season after going bankrupt. It has acquired the original name again, but I can't switch the page back to that original name because the original article already exists and redirects to the newer one. It gives me an error because the article already exists.

For reference the original article/page it needs to be is "Reggina", the current article is set to "LFA Reggio Calabria" which is no longer the name of the club. Haberdasher (talk) 13:18, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invisible comments[edit]

I'm working on The God Who Riots and noticed some invisible text indicating why a category was added. I haven't done much with invisible text and based on my reading of WP:HIDDEN and WP:COMMENT these comments seem unnecessary. Would it be inappropriate to remove the hidden comments as clutter? It seems obvious that a category would be a topic covered in the book and if that isn't obvious then it could have been clarified in the edit summary. Is it common practice to add comments explaining why categories have been added? TipsyElephant (talk) 17:21, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TipsyElephant: It's definitely not common practice to add a commentary to explain the addition of categories to an article, specially when they don't appear to be controversial. Removing them should be fine, though you can always message the editor who first added them to ask why they did so. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 19:03, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Laura Bliss
thank you Sylvan1971 (talk) 15:08, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally you’ll move it to mainspace, as it appears to meet Wikipedia’s standards for publication. Sylvan1971 (talk) 15:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The multiple reviewers that rejected the draft would disagree. The deletion also seems like a way to avoid scrutiny by creating a new draft about the same subject with much of the same sourcing. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 15:15, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sylvan1971, Isabelle Belato makes a very good point. I thought you were abandoning the draft but if you wish to proceed then I can't delete Draft:Laura Bliss as it contains the history of previous rejections. Placing the db-g7 template at the top of the draft is unlikely to work either. I suggest you keep working on the original draft if you wish to continue. I am not sure what the policy is regarding creating multiple drafts, if someone could enlighten me that would be great. Commander Keane (talk) 02:08, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability[edit]

Hi,

I wanted to ask whether if Publications (books) without ISBN or for who ISBN are not available are reliable or not for citing as a source in a article in Wikipedia ?

Example:-

@Rahim231: The ISBN was invented in 1970. Your example book was published in 1949. Presence of an ISBN is not evidence of reliability. Absence of an ISBN is not evidenced of unreliability, even for a book published after 1970. -Arch dude (talk) 20:59, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Oskarzqt. Editor @Another Believer changed the article to a redirect page, with the comment "New article does not demonstrate notability".
You can open a discussion on the talk page of the target article, Talk: Drag Race Germany: remember to ping Another Believer.
To be honest, this is the sort of frustrating thing that happens to new editors when they jump straight into the very challenging task of creating a new article before they have understood much about how Wikipedia works. My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft.. I see the page has been restored. I'm all for more articles about drag queens, but this article does not come close to demonstrating notability. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:07, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

July 15[edit]

Science: referencing a review (2* source) VS an article mentioned in the review (1* source)[edit]

For example, say I’m writing a section about how mitochondria mediate the cell-death response. My main citation is a review article, a secondary source. One relevant fact is that mtDNA lacks CpG methylation. Should I cite this result from the review, or from the original article, a primary source, referenced in the review that I have also read? I’ve seen examples of the latter, but I wonder what the Wikipedia guidelines prescribe. Amayorov (talk) 04:48, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Amayorov, WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT and WP:SCHOLARSHIP should answer your question. Commander Keane (talk) 09:29, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Guy Clark#Personal life says they had a son in 1966 and he remarried in 1972. If she is still alive then she would have 52+ years to get married and divorced again. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:21, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MFD busted?[edit]

Hi - WP:MFD looks busted - error at top, table showing a Lua error. Might be to do with a recent IP address change on that page? The broken table is also showing on WP:RFD. I would attempt to fix it but it's above my paygrade BugGhost🦗👻 16:11, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Rock Springs, Wyoming page was vandalized by Special:Contributions/207.135.255.203. In their edit to the page on 4 July 2024, the user added "also known as Rock Bottom or Crack Springs" sentence to the opening of the page — neither of which are official nicknames and are essentially just denigrating statements toward the character of the town. An edit was conducted by another IP-user at a later date, but said user must've missed the clear and obvious vandalism.
While I think it'd be easy enough for me to simply remove the offending text, I'd like to ask whether or not any of the IP-user's other contributions to Wikipedia constitute vandalism or not in the eyes of the rest of the Wikipedia community, and whether or not if I were to simply remove the offending text before the mods could get to it themselves, if the mod team would be able to do something in particular about the Rock Springs thing after the fact. — D.A.S.C. Talk to me! 20:29, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DASC. Whenever you come across obvious vandalism such as the one you pointed out, feel free to revert it without needing to check with the rest of the community. Not only that, it's good practice to check the recent contributions of vandals to see if they vandalized other articles, which was the case here. All of the IP's recent edits have already been reverted, so there is nothing else to do. Please read WP:RVAN for more information. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 21:33, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

User:Rakibhasanactor is advertising that they are a paid editor for a visual effects studio and has written the entirely promotional Raisul Islam Ador article. I think it's enough to say that this would be preventative for further misuse and general NOTHERE sentiment but I'm not sure how to report it - is ANI the place to go? Someone brought the article to AfD and it's since been CSD'd so that shone a spotlight on it but I think the consequences need to be on the editor rather than just the page. I haven't seen this often but it would be good to know how to address this should it be necessary in the future. Cheers, Kazamzam (talk) 20:28, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kazamzam, thank you for bringing this to the attention of other editors (myself included). The article I have just now deleted was rather incompetent -- it started Raisul Islam Ador is a Film-Maker. Everyone knows him by different names. His various names include Rai and Ador. The editor needs some practice. However, they do not seem to be soliciting business. The first half of I'm a paid editor of Raid Studio vfx company and I can edit another wiki page for free. is the kind of thing that paid editors (who, you should remember, are not outlawed) are expected to say; and it's good that the editor is also offering to help without payment. -- Hoary (talk) 21:03, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to add images to a Wikipedia article[edit]

I have done some slight editing tweaking several Wikipedia articles, but found major mistakes identifying a building in a Wikipedia article about a railroad depot in my area. I have correct pictures of the depot I would like to add to this article but I am not enough of a tech to figure out the code. Can someone tell me, how to add a photograph (downloaded in my PC) to the article? All I can find is how to use Wikipedia photos. THANK YOU in advance !! Timestreasures (talk) 21:24, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timestreasures: Did you take the photo yourself? If so, the process is quite easy. Just go to the Commons Upload Wizard and follow the directions to upload the photo. Then you can use the Commons file name to add the image to the article. If it's a photo you found somewhwere on the Internet, though, it's probably copyrighted and can't be used here. Etiquette for user home pages/sandboxen[edit]

Greetings, keepers of the eternal flame!

Glancing through someone's talk page earlier today, I was reminded that editing people's user pages etc. without warning can be considered a discourtesy, even down to fixing minor Lint formatting errors as reported in various WP:Gnome-type bot pages. I am aware of what WP:Linter allows you to do. This all set me wondering, Are user pages considered semi-private, and if so, why? I consulted my fave guideline WP:Etiquette, and came here for further guidance.

As I see it in very basic and simplistic terms, almost everything that appears on WP is essentially public property under the various Creative Commons licenses, and you press 'Publish' at your peril. I may be horribly wrong. But if I am vaguely right, it seems that some editors skirt around this lack of privilege, maybe unaware even of it, and feel that their user home pages are entirely personal and somehow sacrosanct. How has this feeling come about? Is My Sandbox somehow specially protected because it's called *MY* Sandbox? Genuine questions: If everything on WP is public, why are people so protective about 'their' scribblings? Are they merely misinformed? WP:OWN seems to concentrate on live articles rather than drafts, sandboxes etc. WP:Ownership and editing of user pages sets out some guidelines, but could someone please point me to where this consensus came to be agreed on? This may have occurred many moons ago. MinorProphet (talk) 21:38, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MinorProphet. User pages are not sacrosanct and administrators routinely remove inappropriate content from userpages. The purpose of a userpage is for an editor to describe their interests, accomplishment and plans as a Wikipedia editor. As such, it is a means of communicating with other editors, and not private in any way. Any editor can remove grossly inappropriate content, but it is a good idea to get an administrator involved to revision delete the content and block the offender as appropriate. As for sandboxes, there is little reason to rummage around in them, but their pupose is for improving the encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a free web host, so material unrelated to improving the encyclopedia can be removed. Cullen328 (talk) 22:20, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MinorProphet A Lint error was removed from my userpage a couple of days ago and I thanked the editor who did that. Apart from anything else, it taught me not to make that sort of mistake (wikilinking within external links) in future. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:30, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming Article and Redirect Help[edit]

I attempted to rename the article "Tri County Journal" to "Tri-County Journal" since it needs a hyphen (as per written in the Library of Congress). However, I had some technical issues renaming the page. There are now two redirects, and the original page is now misspelled as "Tr-County Journal". How should we fix this? WafflesBaconAndPuppies (talk) 21:39, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WafflesBaconAndPuppies you could ask at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests. Or an admin may see this question. TSventon (talk) 21:46, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite what instruments members play in a band?[edit]

Basically the title. The band in question is the Smile, namely Jonny also plays cello, and Stillman plays clarinet and keyboards. Previous edits to change this have been reverted, however I couldn't find another mention in the article of Greenwood's harp playing either. I haven't been able to find any written source for this, and I couldn't properly link to videos in the edit summary, so is this doable, or do I have to wait until there is a good written source to use? You mean, this edit, in which you removed a template saying that more sources were needed? (Quote: "This section needs additional citations for verification.") Just look at the second list item, visible in that diff page. It says:
Senior Purser Neerja Bhanot saved the lives of passengers and crew when Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked. She was killed while protecting children from the terrorists. After her death she received the Special Courage Award from the United States Department of Justice and India's highest civilian honour for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra.
-- with not a single reference. In your opinion, is a reference for it not needed? (Or are you asking about something else? A diff might help.) -- Hoary (talk) 06:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tables in page[edit]

Hiya, I've been asked a question on my talk through the mentorship module and I can't figure it out myself.

@Elmidae: I see no problem. Does it happen if you log out? Try to bypass your cache with Ctrl+F5 in Windows browsers. If it still happens then what is your browser and can you describe the problem in more detail or make a screenshot? PrimeHunter (talk) 09:57, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using English language template in another language Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, can anyone please help me about how can i use English language template like

Work in progress; comments welcome

, in another language Wikipedia? Arijit Kisku (talk) 12:15, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arijit Kisku: Templates from other Wikipedia languages cannot be used. You have to make a local template. If you try to copy an English template then you may also have to copy other templates it uses. If you want more help then what is the language and do you know how to create pages in general? A template is just a page with a name starting with "Template:" in English. It may be something else in your language of interest but it actually works to initially say "Template:" which will automatically be translated. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:25, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Arijit Kisku each language version of Wikipedia is a separate project, and templates cannot be used in other language versions. That said, Template:WQA in progress lists 6 other languages in the left-hand column, that have an equivalent template. Hopefully, you are looking for one of those 6. - Arjayay (talk) 12:28, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Translating page[edit]

Hello there,

I just translated a page from Italian into English (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Sossio_Giametta) but as I'm not experienced enough I'm not allowed to publish it. My question is, what happens now? Do I have to ask someone for help?

I do think it deserves its own presence in the English Wiki because there are pages for Colli and Montanari, which were equivalent intellectual figures in Italy.

Thanks very much! Bravenewworld1984 (talk) 13:08, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bravenewworld1984 add and save to invite a review. It is likely to be rejected as it stands because of the large amounts of unreferenced text Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:40, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bravenewworld1984 I recommend reading Help:Your first article as each Wikipedia has its own rules. First you should check that Giametta is suitable for an article on Wikipedia. which normally requires significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject (see WP:BASIC). Secondly, find references for the unreferenced text as already suggested TSventon (talk) 13:59, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
