Chinese athletes return

[edit]

"The People's Republic of China returns to the Olympics after a long absence...." Had PRC ever competed in the Olympics before 1984 (as PRC which was established in 1949, not as ROC or China)? -- Kaihsu 21:18, 2004 Aug 29 (UTC)

I have rewritten the paragraph in the interest of accuracy and NPOV. -- Kaihsu 17:46, 2004 Sep 19 (UTC)
PRC had not appeared in the Olympics before, so I removed 'return' etc. -- Kaihsu 11:51, 2004 Sep 20 (UTC)
WTF, seee 1952. I'll restore "return". Ibicdlcod (talk) 11:30, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Should also be "return" to the Summer Olympics, as PRC competed at the 1980 Winter Olympics as well. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 11:59, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

this is too cool?

[edit]

Anon edit - * before the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, the Eastern Bloc, including the Soviet Union, East Germany and Cuba boycotts these Olympics (the USSR announced their intention not to participate on May 8, 1984).

I've reverted this edit, as the sentence itself states May 1984 - but if anyone can shed more information on this, please do! -- Chuq 02:14, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ronald Reagan

[edit]

Please stop removing the fact that Reagan was a California native. The games were held in Reagan's home state. -- SNIyer12 21:36, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't he born in Indiana---Hailey 18:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Reagan was not a California native. He was born in Illinois. However, he was a California resident for most of his life, and had served as governor before being elected President. The relevance of California being his home state to this article is questionable, but it being his "home state" in 1984 is technically true. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by NYDCSP (talkcontribs) 05:21, 29 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

is his picture and caption really pertinent to the article? a LOT of people live in california but do they have pictures on here? no. John Williams who composed the opening song for the olympics lived there for a while. he even attended college there. why isnt his picture up? Boycott

[edit]

Libya and Iran boycotted the OG due to political troubles with the USA (but they were not a part of the Soviet-Lead Boycott). -- Al1976 (talk) 18:37, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Citing sity concerns

[edit]

"... citing sity concerns ..." What does this mean (in the opening paragraph)? What is "sity" ?

Reference section and citing sources

[edit]

I've added a reference section. Shouldn't more of this article be properly sourced? NYDCSP 05:18, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics

[edit]

See Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics for a new article covering the boycott, similar to American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. -- Matthead discuß!     O       18:52, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Soviet Union argued for the boycott the Granada invasión by the USA the year before and the undercover war they deployed in El Salvador or Nicaragua.
They spoke about the hypocresi of tne USA when the boycott the Moscow Olympics for the invasion of Afghanistan. The USSR reasons for the boycot of the 1984 Olympics looks like a childish revenge in this article, "you didn't atend ours, now we won't go yo yours".
There were more important reasons. 81.38.213.148 (talk) 14:08, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TV-Radio

[edit]

Thank you. Yes, "Arbogast's work not signifigant to the history of the Olympics." How about this: "All Los Angeles radio and television stations covered the Olympics extensively throughout the event.", as if they were not going to cover the Olympics in Los Angeles? What about the closing ceremony?

[edit]

I've read through this article a couple times and couldn't find anything about the closing ceremony. I don't know of any sources, but wasn't there a flying saucer suspended above the stadium while music from 2001 A Space Oddesy played? This took place after the formal ceremony, as a celebration. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.89.55.112 (talk) 18:01, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Here is a video: [1]

Why is this not allowed to be mentioned on the page? The guy who designed the "ship" revealed the design. It's not like this is irrelavant or something either...174.89.58.40 (talk) 19:29, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Teheran bid

[edit]

The reason the Teheran bid failed was because they insisted on removing the Marathon because they were still angry they lost the battle back in the 4th century BCE. We should find a way to include this as it's not only true, but funny as heck 18:19, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Lacrosse

[edit]

Why is there no mention of lacrosse? It was a demonstration sport. The US beat Canada for the gold. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.70.53.42 (talk) 15:41, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

South Korea and Spanish olympic flags

[edit]

Hello! Is it possible for you to correct the errors concerning South Korea and Spain flags during the Olympics. South Korea used the 1949 flag variant in the 1984 Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics until they changed the flag in October of that year. Spain used the flag of the Spanish Olympic Committee during these Games thus Spain Olympic Flag 1980.svg Yours sincerely, Sondre --62.73.207.204 (talk) 19:43, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Effect on policing and racism in Los Angeles

[edit]

Gigi Droesch from NOlympics LA is quoted in this article from them., saying that "residents of the host city, particularly those who are Black, of color, disabled, trans, or otherwise at risk of housing insecurity" are always the most impacted by hosting the Olympics. The article also talks about Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums, the unit within the LAPD, which Droesch describes as "basically targeting people for being Black or Latinx in Los Angeles" and, as setting up the "powder keg" of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, partly as a result of federal funding for police militarisation, as described in this Washington Post article. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 21:55, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Tehran Bid (2)

[edit]

As one who grew up with the Iranian Revolution events ongoing news, I question the statement Tehran withdrew from selection as a result of Iran's policy changes following the Iranian Revolution and a change in the country's ruling system - the Shah did not flee the country until January 1979 when the regime irrevocably changed and the revolution would have been considered over. The reasons need to be stated less vaguely and more specifically, with citation, as surely the Shah was not seriously anticipating abandoning his throne early in 1978. It is more likely that there may have been concerns about the city being a safe venue when the Olympics were due to be staged, and the ability to get labour to prepare infrastucture when Tehran was rife with unrest.Cloptonson (talk) 18:24, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
