scrictly referred to as “ye”
[edit]ye recently exclaimed only being called “ye” and that the name “kanye west” was a slave name. my thinking is that spotify and apple music are gonna refer to him as ye now instead of kanye west which brings up the question wether or not the article name should be called “Ye (musician)” or something like that instead of “Kanye West” Purpetic (talk) 20:11, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- We'll see. See WP:CRYSTAL. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:24, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
@Purpetic and Muboshgu: I've noticed that Ye's artist moniker on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube is still Kanye West, and his latest 2024 albums were released as Kanye West. So Ye is his legal name and Kanye West is still is artist moniker? Israell (talk) 18:14, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- That would suggest that "Kanye West" remains is WP:COMMONNAME. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:23, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Ye should be referred to as "Ye". i've read through the talkpage archives and the arguments used to prevent moving this to its correct title are unpersuasive, especially WP:DEADNAME. the policy in the black community is that one should not "call someone out of their name", and i don't see any real reason to leave this page at its current title, but that's just my two cents. i will likely make a move request unless anyone can provide a persuasive reason to leave it at this title. Daddyelectrolux (talk) 20:52, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- Daddyelectrolux, considering that there have been four unsuccessful requested moves within the past three years, each with essentially the same rationale, such a request could be viewed as disruptive. I don't see WP:DEADNAME used as an argument in the discussions but rather WP:COMMONNAME, which dictates that Wikipedia use the name that is most
commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable, English-language sources)
for the article title. That is policy. Unless you intend to refute that "Kanye West" is his COMMONNAME per that policy, the chances of a successful move appear slim. Throast {{ping}} me! Following the termination of the Gap and Adidas collaborations[1] Ye appeared on multiple podcasts doing interviews, blaming Gap and Adidas for not reaching the affordable price points he wanted.[2]On December 13, 2023, he named Gosha Rubchinskiy as Head of Design at Yeezy via X, Formerly known as Twitter.[3]. During mid-December a small selection of items were available on the yeezy.com website for varying prices. Then, on February 14, 2024, the price of all items was dropped to USD$20. [4]
Following this, On February 22, 2024, West released several items from his terminated Yeezy Gap collaboration on the yeezy.com website in Europe only, seemingly without permission from Gap. On the same day, he premiered a Super Bowl advertisement for the website, which was a low budget phone recording of West speaking in his car.[5] —originally: Shrub4TheDub (talk) 23:33, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

Not done: The first paragraph especially strikes me as out of scope for this particular article, but could be added to Yeezy (brand). Regarding the second paragraph, the fact that he kept selling products licensed by Gap without their permission is not mentioned in the HipHopDX article. Name within the article
[edit]I'm not asking about the article title, I agree that it should remain as is under WP:COMMONNAME. But this policy clearly applies only to the title and not to the name used in the body of the article. Given that the first sentence already introduces him as "Ye", I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be referred to as such throughout the rest of the article, i.e. "Ye is ..." as opposed to "West is ...". Especially because he specifically objects to being referred to as West. WP:DEADNAME is intended for transgender people but not applying the same rule here seems like a double standard in my opinion. 49.182.172.173 (talk) 11:12, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Honestly, I agree. If the article respects the change of his legal and personal name enough to introduce him as such in the lead sentence, it seems fairly uncontroversial to refer to him as Ye throughout. BoldGnome (talk) 11:19, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- MOS:SURNAME says:
When a majority of reliable secondary sources refer to persons by a pseudonym, they should be subsequently referred to by their pseudonymous surnames.
Kanye West is his de facto pseudonym since a majority of RS still use it. Less importantly, he still uses the name on all major streaming services, see Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, and Pandora. He's released music under the name as recently as February of this year. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 14:10, 7 June 2024 (UTC)- This seems like a strange inversion of that policy. It is essentially saying that you should refer to someone by their preferred alias if a sufficient quantity of RSes do so (as opposed to their real name), but you are kind of stretching it to say that actually, "Kanye West" is his pseudonym... Which is technically true now, but that obviously isn't what the policy has in mind. I suppose
For people well known by one-word names, nicknames, or pseudonyms, but who often also use their legal names professionally use the legal surname
appears to support the status quo, but the key word here is "legal" and now that he has changed his name legally that can't be used as a justification. 49.182.172.173 (talk) 05:37, 8 June 2024 (UTC)- The line you cite pertains to legal surnames; "Ye" is a mononym. Generally speaking, we do what RS reflect over what the subject wants. When in doubt, we go with RS unless there are very clear exceptions carved out. There aren't here, so there's no reason to deviate. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 07:00, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- the problem with this argument is that it is not a "pseduonym" anymore. this is a legal name change, not a pseudonym. Daddyelectrolux (talk) 05:36, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Should the allegations by former Yeezy chief of staff Milo Yiannopolous that Kanye is addicted to nitrous gas, as covered in numerous third-party news sources, be included somewhere in the article?
Obviously Milo is a dubious source, but the claims have made the rounds in news media sources so it might warrant inclusion. Coalah (talk) 23:02, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, these allegations have not been picked up by any mainstream reliable sources but rather tabloids. Per WP:PUBLICFIGURE, such allegations should only be included if covered by a multitude of reliable sources. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 16:25, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
