Portal redesign

[edit]

I would encourage you to retain a news, current FAs, Things to do and collaboration sections, in order to encourage people to visit other pages and do some work. Cheers ww2censor 23:26, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took news out because it just wasn't being updated on the side of WikiNews. I'll add FAs again. --sony-youthpléigh 07:13, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More views

[edit]

You are ambitious to make changes daily; weekly would seem more reasonable IMHO. Daily will likely just be too much work for you and take you away from editing other articles, but it's is up to you. I would start slower and if you find you can do more add more frequent changes, rather than have to cut back from your aspired schedule.

I would be inclined to create a box around the Categories and Featured Articles; maybe both in one box if you can do it. I would also be inclined to box the intro too. Another feature you might add is a "New articles" area. A link to the WikiProject Ireland could possibly be unhidden because it takes some digging to find it, even though I know it exists. Remember that ease of use and finding stuff should be the ambition as it may not always be experienced users who may come here. Another useful link might be to the WikiProject Ireland's assessments statistics if you feel it is appropriate. Besides all that, a good job and great to see someone is prepared to do the work. Cheers & thanks ww2censor 23:49, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I cleaned up the "Contributions" section so it points to the Wikiprojects more clearly. I think you're right about the "daily" ambition - it wasn't so hard, but yes, the cutting back, which would happen in time, (which I know I'm doing now!) would not be pleasant. Toning it down to twice a week. Will add "new articles area" - but that would need to be updated pretty regularly so I want to look into a workable system of doing that (any ideas for automation?)
I could put the "Categories" and "Featured Articles" into a box but my idea was to box regularly updated stuff (both because it handy to edit and because it highlights it). Unboxed content is intended to signify "fixed" stuff (at least in the medium- to long-term). Boxing everything ends up in "box cruft". I'd pefer to 'frame' things naturally adn avoid that (though, adminttedly, depending on the relative length of the "Selected picture" and "Selected article" the natural framing of "Categories" and "Features articles" get's wanked out at the botttom).
Thinking about adding the articles by quality statistic ... thinking .... :) --sony-youthpléigh 16:23, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After the renaming of the by-county-categories, I have been adding category text to the categories, and also adding links to this portal, using {{portalpar}}. I hope that this may raise the profile of the portal. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:36, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! Thanks! --sony-youthpléigh 18:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geography

[edit]

Geography of Ireland has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.

Sport

[edit]

I recently updated, tidied and added some references to the Sport section of the Ireland article. :) --Candlewicke (Talk) 17:24, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It still seems a bit overcrowded though when a lot of the information could be contained in its own article. But removing some of the information may prove controversial. Which sports should be represented or how should they be represented? --Candlewicke (Talk) 17:28, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder why you are posting here instead of on the Ireland talk page. ww2censor (talk) 21:35, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. I believe at the time I was curious as to how active this page was. :) --Candlewicke (Talk) 01:02, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An Ireland disambiguation task force (WP:IDTF) has been created. It will: free up various Talk pages for their respective articles, avoid inner and cross article repetition, avoid debate-postponing moratoriums from needing to be placed, and can accommodate all aspects of the issue of disambiguating the word "Ireland". --Matt Lewis (talk) 04:29, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am hoping some members can take a look at the Francis Bacon page. Bacon was born in Ireland, the child of an Australian father and an Irish mother, all grandparents were English. He was raised in Ireland till age 16 when he ran away to London. He is listed on Wikipedia as a British artist, which I am disputing. My arguements are listed here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Francis_Bacon_(painter)#Evidence_that_Francis_Bacon.E2.80.99s_Nationality_was_Irish —Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.114.226.173 (talk) 16:12, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portal Welcome

[edit]

The welcome phrase to this portal in Irish says "Fáilte ar phortal na hÉireann". There should be a chuig instead of "ar". Appalling. Can anyone who knows how to fix this error please fix it as I don't know how to fix it.(Footyfanatic3000 (talk) 16:27, 13 May 2009 (UTC))[reply]

I though chuig was 4, but I did not write it. I'll ask someone. ww2censor (talk) 19:18, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Footyfanatic is correct. The phrase should read Fáilte chuig Portal na hÉireann. See the Irish Aviation Authority website here, the Pensions Board here, and Gael Linn here. These sites show the correct usage. --MacTire02 (talk) 19:48, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 Done ww2censor (talk) 19:55, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the welcome phrase is still wrong. As it stands it reads Fáilte chuig Phortal na hÉireann. The preposition chuig only takes eclipsis/lenition with the singular article an (e.g. chuig an gcailín, chuig an tsúil, chuig an chailín - depending on where you're from). As this article is not present, the phrase should read Fáilte chuig Portal na hÉireann without the leniting h in Portal. Le gach dea-ghuí, --MacTire02 (talk) 09:44, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have corrected it now at the relevant location. --MacTire02 (talk) 09:47, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I did go and ask someone I know on the ga wiki but you guys have fixed it now. Good. ww2censor (talk) 17:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fair faa ye tae... is gramatically incorrect.
Fair means something like free of injustice etc.
Faw means "to befall".Fa
Fair faw means something like "well betide" so fair faw ye is "a blessing or greeting wishing good fortune upon, or good luck to, a person one meets".fair faw ye
It's not possible to "befall" or "well betide" someone to someplace. The (Ulster) Scots for welcome is simply walcome.Walcome
When Robert Burns wrote "Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftan o' the Puddin-race" he wasn't welcoming the "honest, sonsie face" he was wishing good fortune on it.
Och weel! Fair faw guid drink, for it gars fowk speak as thay think.
Perhaps the folk that dreamt up that bit of Ulster Scotched incongruity had imbibed a few themselves.
It may be arguably be grammatically incorrect in standard Modern (Lowland) Scots, but it's the most common way of saying "welcome" in modern Ulster-Scots. It's on road signs, it's on official gov't and council websites, the BBC uses it in their A Kist o Wurds guide to Ulster-Scots – I think it's the best way of wording the Portal welcome in Ullans, but I'd be keen to hear opinions from other (registered) editors. Jon C. 08:18, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While I seem to be the only person doing any maintenance on the Portal, I can't contribute anything to this discussion as my knowledge of Irish, much less any of the other versions. Perhaps someone at the Ireland Project would be better able to assist. ww2censor (talk) 14:37, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair faa ye tae is unfortunately grammatically incorrect in any variety of Scots from any place or any time. I find it rather sad that the purveyors of "modern Ulster-Scots" have so little regard for the communicative capabilities of the real Mackay that they instead prefer to concoct pastiche gibberish. 84.134.182.61 (talk) 17:30, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Millvina Dean - can anyone help with a recent edit,

[edit]

A recent edit to Millvina Dean suggests that following her death the residue of the Millvina fund is going to RNLI, and Irish National Lifeboat Institute. A quick google shows no INLI, and according to the International Life Saving Federation, the RNLI provides the lifeboat service for the Republic. I am not editing out the reference to Irish lifeboats, as the information must have come from somewhere, can someone with any knowledge from Ireland please look at the page? thanks (Hope this is the right place to ask the question - sorry if i've gone the wrong way round.) thanks --IdreamofJeanie (talk) 23:03, 31 May 2009 (UTC)IdreamofJeanie (talk) 22:36, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might be better off to ask at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland. ww2censor (talk) 00:10, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such entity as the "Irish National Lifeboat Institute". Fundraising is carried out for "Lifeboats Ireland", however this is a name used by the RNLI. ClemMcGann (talk) 00:33, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks --IdreamofJeanie (talk) 06:15, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Time Categories for Irish people

[edit]

There are no subcategories in Category:Irish people by time period apart from those for the Medieval and Elizabethan periods. How about categories by century for the 16th 17th, 18th, 19th and perhaps 15th and 20th centuries as for most European countries eg Category:16th-century Scottish people Hugo999 (talk) 01:41, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you are considering constructing an 'Irish People by Time Period' might I suggest a cross reference to De Cusack for a date of 1172 soon after the Norman arrival. —Preceding unsigned comment added by C.Cleeve (talkcontribs) 17:21, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category:1st-century Irish people

[edit]

Category:1st-century Irish people, and other categories regarding 1st-century->4th-century Irish figures, are within the scope of this WikiProject, and have been nominated for possible deletion, merging, or renaming. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the categories' entry on the Categories for discussion page. Thank you. Liz Read! Pronunciation request

[edit]

Can someone add a pronunciation to Taig? It's frustrating to be interested in an article and be unable to pronounce the title.

Proposal to remove "Sister portal" from Intro

[edit]

The topic of the portal is the island of Ireland. Using the term "Sister portal" would suggest that there is a separate island called "Northern Ireland". Northern Ireland is listed frequently on the page and under "Related portals", so it's discoverability should not be impacted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cashew.wheel (talkcontribs) 15:51, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
